US inflation rises to 3.7% as September gasoline prices drive CPI higher
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 0.6% monthly CPI rise in September and 3.7% annual inflation, led by a sharp increase in gasoline.

Published 15 October 2026 (IST); reporting and source material checked through 14 October 2026.
The number behind the headline
The US Consumer Price Index increased 3.7% over the 12 months through September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics release published on 14 October. Compared with August, the seasonally adjusted index rose 0.6%. These figures measure changes in a basket of consumer goods and services, not a uniform price increase for every household. The headline annual rate was higher than August’s 3.4%, putting fresh attention on energy and household affordability.
Gasoline did much of the lifting
The gasoline index jumped 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half the monthly increase in headline CPI. The broader energy index was up 5.2% over the month. Such movements affect travel and transport directly and can eventually raise costs for goods moved by road or air. They do not mean grocery, rent and every other price category rose at the same pace.
Core inflation gives a different signal
Excluding food and energy, the index rose 2.6% over the year and 0.3% over the month. Economists track this measure because fuel and food can be especially volatile. But core inflation is not the complete cost-of-living experience: households must still buy groceries, pay utility bills and travel to work. Looking at headline and core inflation together is more informative than treating either as the only true number.
Policy questions remain open
The report will shape debate about the Federal Reserve’s next decision, but the CPI release itself does not announce any interest-rate change. Policymakers also consider jobs, wages and growth. The most useful follow-up will be the next monthly inflation release and official central-bank statements, rather than treating an individual news headline as a rate forecast.
