India’s 85 medals and the New Delhi meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s 2026 Asian Games athletes at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on 15 October. The government said the contingent won 85 medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Games in Japan: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze, placing India fourth overall.

What the medal tally reveals

The event recognized athletes, coaches and support staff after achievements across a wide range of disciplines. Notable results reported by the Prime Minister’s Office included gold in both men’s and women’s hockey, a first gold in women’s trap shooting and medals in sports where India had limited prior success.

Support for athletes after the Games

Medal ceremonies can focus attention on athletes whose work receives less coverage between major competitions. The longer-term test is whether training support, coaching access and sporting infrastructure grow alongside public recognition.
