Drone monitoring across railway stations

East Coast Railway has deployed 11 drones as part of a security-surveillance initiative covering its 284-station network. The equipment is intended to help railway personnel monitor vulnerable tracks, identify unsafe trespass and respond to reports of stone pelting or theft.

What aerial surveillance can and cannot do

The railway plans to expand the fleet to 22 drones by March 2027. A drone can help crews assess a location quickly, but the technology does not replace ground-based policing, fencing or maintenance work. A large number of stations also does not mean each station has a drone permanently stationed overhead.

Expansion and passenger privacy questions

The useful test will be operational results: incidents identified, response times and safeguards governing how surveillance footage is retained and used. Passengers can report immediate threats through railway security channels rather than relying on drone coverage alone.
