Northeast monsoon reaches southern India

IndiaтАЩs northeast monsoon began over south peninsular India on 15 October, according to regional weather reporting citing the India Meteorological Department. The shift increases the likelihood of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and adjoining areas.

Rainfall alerts and local flood risks

Forecasts for 16 October highlighted the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi and Madurai in Tamil Nadu, with very heavy rain possible in certain locations. KeralaтАЩs alert pattern has also varied by district. Rain warnings refer to forecast risk, not a guarantee that every locality will experience the same intensity.

How to follow location-specific warnings

Travelers, farmers and coastal residents should use district-level IMD updates because alerts are revised as weather systems move. Drivers should avoid waterlogged underpasses and motorists should not interpret a yellow or orange warning as a uniform state-wide shutdown.
