Severe rainfall and rescues in Istanbul

Severe rain that began on Wednesday night inundated Istanbul, leaving at least three people dead according to the governor’s office on 15 October. Four others were reported missing at the time. Officials said rescue teams evacuated more than 2,700 people stranded by floodwater across the city.

Why urban flooding can escalate quickly

Water submerged underpasses, homes and businesses and disrupted transport. One reported death involved electrocution in standing water; others were associated with storm conditions. Authorities extended school closures and urged residents to limit unnecessary movement as the weather agency predicted further showers.

Recovery work and changing casualty numbers

The scale of the emergency shows why flash flooding in dense cities can be dangerous even away from a major river. Emergency workers must contend with traffic, electrical equipment and rapidly changing water levels. Death and missing-person counts can change as authorities complete searches.
